Navigating mental health challenges can feel isolating, especially when you're just starting out in life.
In this case study, we follow Sam’s journey: a young adult facing uncertainty, emotional distress, and workplace struggles, who found renewed purpose and resilience with the help of the NDIS and the dedicated team at Sureway Health & Wellbeing.
About Sam
At 22, Sam had already endured more than most. They were living with high levels of psychological distress, with severe scores in depression and stress on the DASS21 assessment.
As an NDIS participant, Sam hoped to get the right kind of support that they needed, but wasn't sure where to begin or what their future might hold.
Facing the Challenges
Like many young people, Sam was eager to build an independent life. However, limited job experience and a lack of direction left them feeling stuck. On top of this, complicated workplace dynamics made things worse.
The stress of managing anxiety in the workplace and navigating difficult relationships meant that even short periods of employment felt overwhelming. With growing feelings of hopelessness and self-doubt, Sam struggled to see a way forward.
How We Helped
Sam was referred to one of our experienced counsellors at Sureway Health & Wellbeing. From the very first session, we focused on providing compassionate, one-on-one counselling for depression and anxiety, building a strong therapeutic relationship grounded in trust and safety.
Together, Sam and their counsellor explored practical strategies for dealing with anxiety at work, managing overwhelming thoughts, and identifying early warning signs of stress. As their confidence began to grow, the sessions shifted toward discovering Sam’s interests, values, and strengths.
Through our person-centred approach, Sam worked with our counsellor to create an achievable plan for the future. This included identifying a training pathway aligned with their skills and setting realistic, empowering goals around employment.
A New Chapter Begins
After several months of consistent support and hard work, Sam’s DASS21 scores improved dramatically, moving into the “normal” range for both depression and stress. The positive shifts in their mental well-being opened new doors.
With renewed self-belief and a clear direction, Sam enrolled in a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) course designed to help them build the skills needed for meaningful employment.
It was a proud and hopeful moment that reflected just how far Sam had come with the right support for anxiety and depression.
